The daily casualties of war. The poverty. The violence, corruption and lawlessness. The current approach to Afghanistan isn’t working. We think it’s time for a fresh approach.
For many Afghans, life remains bleak and uncertain, a constant struggle to make ends meet. They face violence, corruption, injustice and insecurity on a daily basis. Many have no reliable access to even the most basic services, like doctors or schools. Most Afghans can’t get legal redress to obtain justice. Meanwhile, too many of those accused of abusing people’s rights remain in positions of authority, acting above the law.
In the ten years since the toppling of the Taliban regime, billions of dollars have been spent on the country. Aid has made some difference: there are more roads, schools and clinics than before. Yet, Afghanistan is still ranked as one of the very poorest and least developed countries in the world.
Some commentators believe Afghanistan is hopeless and beyond repair. We disagree.
We think we need a fresh approach that focuses squarely on what Afghans need to build a better future – and what the international community needs to do to support them.
An approach that ensures aid is used for the long-term benefit of the Afghan people, for lasting change.
An approach that focuses on protecting civilians, and individual dignity.
An approach that pursues a path towards a just and lasting end to the conflict, an approach that all Afghans will support.
Every day, despite the huge challenges they face, resourceful and determined Afghans are working for a different, better future. Support them.
